Picture of St. Bernard Dog
Description of The St. Bernard Dog! St. Bernard dogs are quite large dogs with big heads and long heavy tails. A fully grown St Bernard dog can weigh over 250lbs. The Switzerland St. Bernard Club was founded in Basle 15th March in the year of 1884, and the St. Bernard Dog was the very first breed of dogs to be entered into the Swiss Stud Book of that same year as the club was founded. The St. Bernard breed standard was finally approved by the Swiss St. Bernard in 1887, and since then the St. Bernard was made the national dog of Switzerland! The name St. Bernard originates from a traveller infirmary on the often treacherous St. Bernard Pass in the Western Alps between Switzerland and Italy where the name was passed to the local dogs and that's how the name of St. Bernard originated! Before that time St. Bernards they were called "Alpenmastiff" "Noble Steeds" "Saint Dogs," or "Barry Dogs!" St. Bernard puppy dogs must first be put amongst other dogs and people to enable them to become accustomed to small children and other smaller dogs while they are still young pups, if they are to be kept as pet dogs.
