Picture of Przewalski Horse
A description of Przewalski Horse Scientific name (Equus prezwalkii): The discovery of the Przewalski Horse was discovered by Colonel Nikolai Przewalski who made voyages of discovery into Central Asia, announced that he had heard of wild horses still in existence in Southwest Mongolia. On his third journey Colonel Nikolai Przewalski came across two herds of strange looking wild horses up in the Mountains of Tachin Schara Nuru, the Colonel immediately named his discovery of the horses after himself. However, wild Przewalski are extinct in the wild since 1968 due to hunting and disturbances! The Przewalski horse shown is an European bred and is the descendant of 13 animals, hence, being in captivity has saved the Przewalski breed of horses from complete extinction! Breeding programs have been set up and plans are in progress for young Przewalski horses to be re-introduced to the wild Russia, China and Mongolia. Przewalski horses are small similar to domestic horses, the only difference between the domestic horse is the fact that Przewalski horses have short tale and upright main with no forelock. These horses have a lifespan of between 25 to 30 years, and they like living in herds that consists of just one stallion consisting of between 5 and 6 mares along with their foals!
