History the of Bedlington Terrier dog breed shown in photograph above: the Bedlington Terrier was initially bred from a combination of local British terriers with an outcross to whippets. The coal miners of Rothbury in Northumberland, UK developed the Bedlington breed probably in the middle 18th century. The Bedlington Terrier had a reputation as a killer of vermin, a poacher’s sidekick and a fighter. The dog is sometimes called by the names of The Rothbury Terrier and The Gypsy Dog, due to its poaching ability The Bedlington Terrier breed of dogs has an acute sense of smell and hearing. The Bedlington dog is also bred for speed and has the ability to go to ground. With the Bedlington's acute senses, it became an excellent hunter dog for the coal miners. The Bedlington Terrier was also first rate water dog. It said that this dog breed have been known to take on badgers and foxes. Bedlington Terriers was even entered in dog fighting matches in pits. These dogs have been known to fight to the death. Bedlington Terrier dogs were often portrayed as the dog that looks just like a lamb on a leash!
